MEDICINE HAT – Glen Motz, Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner and Associate Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, has been appointed to the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP).
“I am honoured to serve my country in this role and look forward to engaging with colleagues on the very sensitive and important work of the Committee that is essential to protecting Canadians.” said MP Motz.
NSICOP has the mandate to review the overall framework for national security and intelligence in Canada, including legislation, regulations, policy, administration and finances. They may also review any activity carried out by a department or agency that relates to national security or intelligence. Finally, NSICOP may review any matter relating to national security or intelligence referred by a Minister.
In order to achieve this mandate, the Committee is entitled to have broad access to classified information held by departments within the Government of Canada. This provides the ability to examine Canada’s national security and intelligence framework from a strategic perspective.
All members of NSICOP have a Top Secret security clearance, are permanently bound to secrecy, and have taken the oath of office set out in the NSICOP Act. In the course of activities, members are also required to comply with the stringent NSICOP security regulations.
