MP Glen Motz celebrated the arrival of the new Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole on August 24 following this historic leadership race. He won the Conservative Party race on the third ballot taking 57% of the votes. Erin O’Toole, a former Cabinet Minister and the current Member of Parliament for Durham has been in the House of Commons since 2012. Erin brings extensive experience to his role as leader. In addition to his political experience, Erin served as an Air Force navigator and later a lawyer therefore understands the challenges facing our companies today. He helped found the True Patriot Love Foundation to support veterans in Canada, and went on to serve as the Minister of Veteran’s Affairs in the last 10 months of the Harper Government – turning around the portfolio after several challenging years.
The Conservative Leadership race drew record numbers of supporters, saw much of the activities including the final results move online due to the pandemic, and demonstrated a sharp contrast to the Trudeau Liberal’s mismanagement, scandals and obstruction of Parliament. The Leadership race drew a record number of members (nearly 270,000) and a record number of votes (nearly 175,000) – both records. Since the 2019 election, Canadian support for the Conservative Party continues to grow across the country and shows that Canadians are tired of Liberal corruption, waste, taxes and scandals that hurt our country. Dr. Lewis surpassed all expectations and defeated successful politicians despite never holding political office and with little name recognition. Lewis placed third in the race, taking the popular vote in four provinces and two territories on the second ballot. Originally from Jamaica, Lewis worked hard to receive several degrees including her law degree, becoming a professor of law at the University of Toronto.
“I am looking forward to working with Erin and the entire team to get ready for the next election. Canada needs ethical and competent leadership and I know Erin has the experience – in government, in the corporate world and as the founder of a charity – to put Canada back on track,” said MP Motz. “Erin is bringing the renewal I believe many Canadians are looking for and working to grow our support for a Conservative government that works to help Canadians get ahead,” he said.
Erin O’Toole was born in Montreal. He enrolled in the RCAF when he was 18 and attended the Royal Military College. He did basic training in Chilliwack, BC; got his wings in Winnipeg, MB; and served out of Halifax, NS. Erin participated in search and rescue missions as a tactical navigator. He is bilingual.
After 12 years of service, Erin retired from the military and spent the next decade working in the private sector as a corporate lawyer. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors for the True Patriot Love Foundation, a charity that serves veterans and military families across Canada.
He has been elected 3 times in Durham (2012 by- election, 2015 and 2019). He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade before becoming Minister of Veterans Affairs, a beleaguered file he successfully turned around within 10 months at the end of the Harper government.
